Iraqi officials have expressed interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Russia. The Kremlin is using the propaganda Telegram channel Rybar to expand its influence and promote its interests in the region, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). "On January 25, the Telegram channel Rybar reported that its team, including founder Mikhail Zvinchuk, visited Iraq over the past week. During the visit, they met with senior Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani. The Iraqi side expressed willingness to expand trade and attract foreign investments from Russia, emphasizing the importance of developing bilateral relations," ISW stated. The channel also urged Russian companies, media outlets, bloggers, and investors to explore opportunities for cooperation with Iraq. This is not the Kremlin’s first move in this direction—Rybar representatives had previously met with Iraqi officials in August 2024, demonstrating Russia’s continued interest in strengthening ties between the two countries. According to ISW, Russia seeks to expand its role in the region, preparing for a potential U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq. The Kremlin views this as a strategic opportunity to increase its influence and push the U.S. out as Iraq’s primary security partner. The recent collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria has likely prompted Moscow to reassess its foreign policy strategy in the Middle East. In this context, Iraq is seen as a key partner for Russia in trade, infrastructure, and security cooperation.
