U.S. President Donald Trump believes that the United States will gain control over Greenland, stating that it is crucial for the "freedom of the world." Trump made this statement while speaking with journalists aboard Air Force One, as reported by BBC. In recent weeks, Trump has once again expressed interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory and now makes it clear that his intentions are serious. "I think we will get it (Greenland)," he told journalists on Saturday, adding that the island’s 57,000 residents supposedly desire this. "I think people want to be with us," Trump said. "I don't know what claims Denmark has over it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they did not allow this to happen because it is for the protection of the free world," he added. "I think we will get Greenland because it is tied to the freedom of the world… This has nothing to do with the United States, except that we are the only ones who can guarantee freedom. They cannot," Trump continued. His comments came after reports that, during a tense phone call last week, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insisted that Greenland was not for sale. The Financial Times quoted an anonymous European official who described the conversation between Trump and Frederiksen as "horrible." Another official stated that Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland was "serious and potentially very dangerous." Trump has recently revived the idea of purchasing the strategically important and resource-rich Arctic island. He first proposed the idea during his first term, calling U.S. control over the semi-autonomous Danish territory an "absolute necessity."
