Kaja Kallas nominated to manage EU foreign policy

The Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has been nominated as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy by European state leaders. She announced it on X on June 28. "Honoured to be nominated as the candidate for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Your trust means a lot. We must continue working together to ensure Europe is an effective global partner to keep our citizens free, safe and prosperous," the Estonian PM said. The EU leaders also approved candidates for the other top EU positions: Ursula von der Leyen as the European Commission President and António Costa as the European Council President. They heave already met in Brussels to get ready for the further cooperation. It is known that Italy and Hungary were among those who didn't support such an arrangement. The European Parliament will conduct votes in mid-July to decide whether von der Leyen will remain in power as the President of European Commission and whether Kaja Kallas will succeed Josep Borrell to define the EU foreign policy. Antonio Costa does not need the Parliament's approval to head the European Council.
