EU ambassadors agreed on 14th package of sanctions against Russia

The European Union ambassadors have reached a consensus on the 14th package of sanctions which is a response to Russia's continuous aggression against Ukraine. The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU announced this on its official X account. "This package provides new targeted measures and maximises the impact of existing sanctions by closing loopholes," Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU elaborated on the matter. This is the first complex of sanctions that target Russian gas, however, not directly. They will prevent the EU from re-exporting Russian LNG and block financing for Russia’s planned Arctic and Baltic LNG terminals. The discussion of the 14th package lasted more than a month as Hungary and, surprisingly, Germany kept opposing some of the clauses. Earlier, the European Council prolonged the sanctions introduced in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation until June 2025.
