Russia plans to increase military spending in 2025 – Bloomberg

In 2025, Russia plans to increase its defense spending to $142 billion, which will account for 6.2% of the country's GDP, according to an analysis by Bloomberg based on Russia's draft three-year budget. The report highlights that defense and internal security expenditures are projected to make up about 40% of Russia's total budget spending by 2025, as Putin continues to shift the economy towards a war footing amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. This defense spending will surpass the combined allocations for education, healthcare, social policy, and the national economy. According to the draft budget, Russia intends to raise defense spending to 13.2 trillion rubles ($142 billion) in 2025, up from 10.4 trillion rubles planned for 2024. Bloomberg estimates that military expenditure will decrease slightly in the following years, with defense costs expected to fall to 5.6% of GDP in 2026 and 5.1% in 2027. Additionally, expenditures on classified or unspecified budget items are expected to rise to 12.9 trillion rubles in 2025, from 11.1 trillion this year, remaining at around 30% of total budget spending.
