Portugal monitors Russian warships off its coast

The Portuguese Navy has been closely monitoring five Russian warships near the Portuguese coast for several days. According to reports, the monitoring began on December 31. The list of vessels includes the landing ship Alexander Shabalin, the logistics support vessels Baltic Leader, Sparta II and General Skobelev, which have already crossed the Mediterranean, and the submarine Novorossiysk, which is moving along Portugal's exclusive economic zone. This operation was the 73rd monitoring mission of the Portuguese Navy in 2024. “The fleet's monitoring and surveillance activities guarantee the protection of our maritime space, which is under national sovereignty and jurisdiction. This contributes to the protection of Portugal's interests, its critical infrastructure, and compliance with international obligations within NATO,” the fleet said. As a reminder, during the week of December 23-29, NATO fighter jets flew two sorties to escort Russian aircraft in the Baltic States. Meanwhile, Polish fishermen reported interruptions in GPS operation in the Baltic Sea. The post Portugal monitors Russian warships off its coast appeared first on Freedom.
