The European Union has announced an additional €250,000 in funding to support Ukrainian culture, while the United Kingdom is set to more than double its contribution to the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund, UATV English reports. The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Brussels between European Commissioner for Youth, Culture and Sport Glenn Micallef and UK Minister for Media, Tourism and Creative Industries Ian Murray. “A key part of today’s discussion was Ukraine. The Union remains determined to continue supporting Ukraine. This war is not only fought on the battlefield — it is also waged against the soul of a nation, its culture, its memory, and its identity,” Micallef said. He highlighted the “devastating impact” of the war on Ukraine’s cultural heritage, artists, and the broader cultural sector. “In response, the European Union remains committed to supporting Ukraine. This includes preserving and protecting its cultural heritage and creative community,” he added, noting that since the start of the war, the EU has mobilized more than €50 million to support Ukraine’s cultural and creative sectors. Micallef also pointed out that, alongside European Commission initiatives, the “Team Europe” framework has brought together 24 EU member states to implement 76 actions aimed at supporting Ukraine. “I am pleased to announce today that the European Commission will increase support by an additional quarter of a million euros,” he said, adding that the funding will help Ukraine strengthen risk management capacity and ensure the protection of cultural sites, archives, and artworks even under the most challenging conditions. For his part, Murray emphasized the joint efforts of the EU and the United Kingdom in supporting Ukraine. “I am pleased to confirm that the United Kingdom is more than doubling its contribution to the Ukraine Cultural Heritage Fund,” he said. The funding is intended to help Ukraine protect, restore, and rehabilitate its cultural heritage — from safeguarding storage facilities and collections to developing digitization skills and training cultural professionals. “Together, we are sending a clear message: culture matters, heritage matters, and attempts to erase identity, history, and creativity will not succeed,” Murray stressed. As reported, the European Parliament recently hosted a discussion titled “Culture as National Security,” focusing on the role of culture during wartime and Ukraine’s participation in the 61st Venice Biennale.
