Finland to Verify Weapons Deliveries to Ukraine Under PURL Program

Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said his country is ready to verify whether weapons purchased for Ukraine under the PURL initiative are actually being delivered as intended, UATV English reports. Speaking in an interview with Euronews, Häkkänen emphasized that any weapons promised to Ukraine must reach the country. “What has been pledged to Ukraine must be delivered. That is clear,” he said. The statement comes amid concerns that arms acquired by European countries through the PURL mechanism could be redirected to other conflicts, particularly the war involving Iran. Finland is currently holding discussions with NATO, the United States, and partner nations to assess the situation. Häkkänen stressed that Finland regularly evaluates how funds are used within the program and maintains confidence in the system. However, he noted that any issues would prompt a reassessment. “If there are problems, then we must review it,” he added. The Finnish minister also reiterated Ukraine’s continued need for air defense systems, as the country faces ongoing aerial threats. Reports have previously suggested that the U.S. Department of Defense is considering redirecting some weapons initially intended for Ukraine to the Middle East, due to the strain on American stockpiles caused by the conflict with Iran.
