U.S. defense technology company Shield AI is working with a Ukrainian partner to integrate its autonomous control system Hivemind AI software into Ukrainian-made drones. The project is being implemented through Ukraine’s defense innovation cluster Brave1. The partnership was announced after a delegation from the cluster visited Shield AI’s production facility in Texas. According to the company, Hivemind is the core artificial intelligence software developed by Shield AI that can perform the role of a human pilot or operator. The system enables unmanned platforms to perceive their surroundings, make decisions, and carry out missions autonomously. Unlike traditional autopilot systems that follow pre-programmed routes, Hivemind can dynamically adjust flight paths, avoid restricted zones, navigate around obstacles, and respond to unexpected conditions during missions. Shield AI also noted that its drone V-BAT drone is already operating in Ukraine, conducting reconnaissance, surveillance, and target designation missions. The V-BAT is a compact vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system classified as a NATO Class I drone. It can remain airborne for more than 12 hours and is powered by a heavy-fuel engine. The drone has already completed more than 130 missions in Ukraine. It was also recently demonstrated during the HEIMDALL 26 NATO exercise in Norway, where it operated in harsh Arctic conditions. Shield AI has additionally begun training Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces to operate the V-BAT platform and has opened an office in Kyiv to support its growing team of engineers, mission specialists, and technical experts working with Ukrainian partners.
