The UK government will carry out an urgent independent review into foreign interference in the country’s political and electoral systems, according to a press release on Tuesday, December 16, UATV English reports. “The government has approved an independent review into foreign financial interference in the UK’s political and electoral systems, which will be led by Philip Rycroft, head of the Department for Exiting the European Union,” the statement said. The report is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government by the end of March 2026. The review will provide a thorough assessment of current financial rules and safeguards and will propose recommendations to further reduce risks associated with foreign political interference. The government highlighted the case of Nathan Gill, a former UK politician recently sentenced for accepting bribes to promote pro-Russian narratives. “The facts are clear. A British politician took bribes to advance the interests of the Russian regime — a regime that forcibly deported vulnerable Ukrainian children and killed a British citizen on UK soil using a deadly nerve agent. This conduct is a stain on our democracy. The independent review will work to remove this stain,” said Housing Secretary Steve Reed. As previously reported, in November, Nathan Gill, former MEP for the UK and former leader of Reform UK in Wales, who admitted to taking bribes to lobby for Russian interests, was sentenced to 10½ years in prison.
