The Kremlin is increasingly using Russian universities as recruitment hubs for the war, offering students facing expulsion the option to serve in drone units instead of continuing their studies. This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council on Telegram, UATV English reports. “At one of Russia’s leading universities — the Higher School of Economics — students facing expulsion are being offered the option to serve for one year in drone forces instead of continuing their studies. During this period, they are granted academic leave with the possibility of returning to university after completing their service,” the statement said. According to the CCD, similar schemes are already being implemented at other prestigious technical universities across Russia. In practice, universities are now functioning as recruitment centers. The CCD stressed that the Kremlin is deliberately reshaping the education system to serve the war, erasing the boundary between the civilian sphere and the military machine. Whereas higher education previously focused on knowledge and professional development, Russian universities are now tasked with identifying and recruiting human resources for the war effort. “The militarization of universities is further proof that the Putin regime is preparing for a long war and views young people solely as expendable resources,” the CCD emphasized. Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Defense Forces are establishing specialized units focused on tracking and eliminating Russian drone operators.
