In response to repeated Russian attacks on European satellites and space assets, the European Commission is rolling out a European Space Shield to detect and deter such threats, according to EC spokesperson Toma Renier on February 4, UATV English reports. Renier emphasized that targeting European space assets has been a longstanding Russian practice, and that the EU is well-prepared to respond: “Targeting European space assets or satellites is something Russia has been doing for years, if not decades… We are very well aware of this issue.” Key details: The EU already leverages Galileo, which can detect and help deter attacks. As part of its defense roadmap, the EU has advanced four flagship space programs. The new European Space Shield aims specifically to protect satellites and other space assets. Renier stressed: “We know Russia is doing this, and we are ready to counter it if needed.” Background: Recently, Russian space systems reportedly intercepted at least ten key satellites of European countries, threatening sensitive data. The EU launched Govsatcom, a program uniting satellite communication capabilities of 27 member states. By 2030, the EU plans to establish a secure satellite communication system for military intelligence, alongside a platform for exchanging military data independent of the U.S., reflecting growing concerns over reliance on Washington for European defense. This initiative represents a significant step toward autonomous European space and defense capabilities in the face of ongoing Russian hybrid threats.
