THE US is advising its citizens to reconsider travelling to Trinidad and Tobago owing to crime levels. Updated on July 2, the US Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs' Travel State website said, "TT is at orange level (level three) – reconsider travel – due to crime. "Exercise increased caution in TT due to terrorism and kidnapping." The website also listed areas in Port of Spain where US government officials are prohibited from travelling – Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite and the interior of the Queen's Park Savannah. After dark, officials are also prohibited from travelling to downtown Port of Spain, Fort George overlook and all beaches. "Violent crime such as murder, robbery, assault, sexual assault, home invasion and kidnapping is common. "Gang activity such as narcotics trafficking is common. A significant portion of violent crime is gang-related." The website said terrorists may attack with little or no warning in high-traffic areas such as tourist locations, local government facilities, major sporting and cultural events, airports, shopping malls, parks, places of worship, educational institutions and other public areas. The website (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/trinidad-and-tobago-travel-advisory.html) gave recommendation to US citizens if they do decide to travel to Trinidad and Tobago: Use caution when walking or driving at night Review Trinidad and Tobago country security report Be wary of meeting individuals through dating or social media applications Do not display signs of wealth such as expensive watches or jewellery Do not resist any robbery attempts Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your plans Prepare a contingency plan for emergencies Enrol in the smart traveller enrolment programme to receive alerts and make it easier for authorities to locate you in an emergency.
