Guyana court rules Azim Bassarath’s election as CWI VP ‘null and void’

THE High Court of Guyana on August 5 has ruled in favour of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and declared Azim Bassarath's election as vice president of Cricket West Indies (CWI) null and void. The TT Cricket Board boss was elected as CWI vice president on March 25, 2023 at the 24th annual general meeting in Antigua. Bassarath was unopposed, and gained six votes with two voting against, while four abstained. In April this year, the GCB took legal action as it insisted that Bassarath's election was flawed and illegal. In January 2023, the GCB nominated Bassarath for the post of CWI vice president. However, at the AGM, the GCB “submitted a letter and made clear of its position that it had withdrawn its nomination of Mr Azim Bassarath for the post.” The election went ahead with CWI saying everything was fair and transparent. In an immediate response to the ruling on August 5, CWI, headed by president Dr Kishore Shallow, has decided to appeal the decision. The case was brought against Cricket West Indies Inc, Bassarath, and Gregory Nicholls, the returning officer, all of whom were named as respondents. Through counsel, the respondents contended that the court was without jurisdiction to hear the matter and that disputes of this nature should be resolved through arbitration. On the contrary, the court decided it had jurisdiction and granted the orders sought by the GCB. CWI said it will await the decision of the appellate court.
