11-year-old Jenae Ferdinand runs ice-cream business

Jenae Ferdinand is proof that there is no specific age to become an entrepreneur, at eleven years old, she has her very own ice-cream business. Jenae's business Kaylee's Delights is located at Phase 5 La Horquetta, Arima, where she sells a variety of flavours served in cups, wafer cones and waffle cones, with a range of toppings inclusive of sprinkles, gummy bears and Nerds. Jenae balances her school and business life though it may prove to be a task at times. She is a standard four student at La Horquetta South Government Primary School and also attends lessons four times a week. She began her business four years ago and has been an entrepreneur for the past three years. Jenae's mother Kerryann Ferdinand describes her as having great interpersonal skills, caring, intelligent, outspoken and extremely driven. Having these characteristics has proven to be beneficial to her business as one of her biggest learning experiences is dealing with different personalities. Ferdinand said, "This encouraged her to always be polite no matter who she's dealing with." Being an entrepreneur does not always mean one would make a profit as some days for Jenae may not be as profitable as other days. Jenae said that she is motivated by the fact that she earns her own money which she uses to repurchase her goods and save for future endeavours and her strong support system. Times where sales are extremely low and Jenae may not have enough funds to restock on her goods she may feel a little disappointed however her drive to succeed keeps her going. Jenae said that she has two role models including her mother and her aunt Joan. However she herself is seen as a role model to children in her community. Outside of being an entrepreneur Jenae has other interests. She enjoys gymnastics, baking and even making bracelets which she also sells to her classmates, Jenae said. Jenae desires to continue her business career and is striving to have her grow her business in the future.
