Princes Town man with no permit fined over $11k for driving offences

SIX months after a 31-year-old man crashed into a gate while fleeing Princes Town municipal police, he faced a magistrate charged with five offences, including dangerous driving, which arose from the incident. He has never had a driver's permit. Dillon Figaro, 31, of Claude Avenue, off St Croix Road, pleaded guilty to all charges before magistrate Margaret Alert, who fined him a total of $11,250. She also disqualified him from holding a driver's permit for the next 12 months. On February 2, PC Ramjohn and other municipal police on mobile patrol saw a white Datsun 120Y heading along St Croix Road. Ramjohn stopped the car and asked the driver for his driving documents. Instead of handing them over, the man drove off, and the police chased him. In trying to get away, the driver crashed the car into a nearby gate and ran off into some nearby bushes. The crash, including the suspect fleeing, was captured on camera and went viral on social media. ASP Guzman led an investigation which ended in Figaro's arrest earlier this month. On August 5, he first appeared before Alert in the Princes Town Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to all charges. The charges were driving without ever being issued a permit, driving without an insurance certificate, driving dangerously, failing to comply with the police and failing to wear a seatbelt. The magistrate adjourned the case to August 9, when she sentenced him. Alert fined Figaro $7,000 for dangerous driving, which is to be paid on or before December 31, or, in default, serve six months in jail with hard labour. The magistrate also fined Figaro $3,000 for driving without an insurance certificate. He has to pay this fine one or before October 30 and, in default, serve three months' jail with hard labour. Figaro was fined $750 for failing to comply with police instructions and $500 for driving without a permit. Both fines were to be paid immediately. The magistrate reprimanded and discharged him for failing to wear a seatbelt.
