Trinidad and Tobago fighter earns bronze at MMA World Youth Champs

Trinidad and Tobago's Alyssa Adams earned a bronze medal at the recently concluded International Mixed Martial Arts Federation World Youth championships in Abu Dhabi. The championships, held from August 6-10, featured over 800 fighters from 45 countries. Adams started her campaign beating Ireland's Maggie Meaney, the favourite in the 52kg C class. However, Adams lost by points to Sonayeva Ayan of Azerbaijan, who when on to claim the silver medal. Adams trains at the Gracie jiu-jitsu TT fight club under Warren Gill, MMA technical director of TT. Other TT fighters included Keyla Gonzales (52kg B class),who lost to home-town favourite Maryam Almutwa, and Uri Mahabir, who lost in the 52kg B class to Tony Yazbeck from Lebanon. The TT contingent included five fighters. It was the first time a Caribbean team competed at the championships. Warren Gill refereed seven bouts and was a judge in over 46 fights. Prior to the championships, IMMAF president Kerrith Brown said he was pleased with the record number of fighters. He said, "We are excited to continue to build a safe pathway for youngsters to develop as athletes and human beings and everyone can expect increased efforts from the IMMAF to continue making safeguarding a priority as we expand our youth tournaments around the globe."
