Trinidad and Tobago boxers shine at OECS, Guyana tourneys

THE Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Association (TTBA) has congratulated the national contingent for their performances at the OECS Invitational Boxing Championships in St Lucia and Caribbean Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championship in Guyana. The TT team copped ten gold medals and 12 silver to place first overall at the OECS tournament last month. In a media release, the TTBA said based on the results, it anticipates having a representative at the next Olympics. No TT fighter qualified for the 2024 Paris Games. "Our schoolboys/girls and juniors continue to show the kind of development/intensity that will be necessary to take us to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics," the TTBA said. "We also have to compliment the coaches who have been making all kinds of sacrifices not only with the winning of medals but in keeping the team together; also the parents for the support system they are providing, and let's not forget our officials who are ever present at all sessions." Apart from the host nation, there were also fighters from Grenada, Martinique and Barbados competing in the youth, novice, junior, and elite categories. TT's Shawn Ramnath was adjudged best schoolboy. At last week's Caribbean schoolboys/girls tournament in Guyana, TT placed second overall with 29 points, behind perennial champions Guyana (38 points). Other countries competing included St Lucia, Grenada, Suriname, Antigua and Barbados. TT's Reyah John was voted best female junior boxer. Shawn Ramnath was again voted schoolboy boxer of the tournament and Neraj Mahadeosingh was the youth boxer of the tournament.
