Central cops in walkabout to strengthen ties with communities

COUVA and Gran Couva police held a joint walkabout on August 16 in both districts to strengthen community ties. From what Newsday was told, the officers received “positive and commendable responses” from residents, including the business community. The exercise took place between 9 am and 11.30 am. It was geared towards community partnership, upholding the police’s vision to make everywhere in TT safe and their mission to partner with the people to provide safe and secure communities. The officers distributed flyers and brochures about the service, including crime-prevention tips. Snr Supt Simon and Supt Glodon co-ordinated the exercise, which was led by ASP Ablacksingh, Insp Seepersad and Sgt Maharaj. It included officers from the stations and the Gran Couva Police Youth Club. Many residents said they hope to see more similar exercises in future. The exercise came on the heels of the police-involving shooting deaths in Freeport on August 14 of six people – five men and a 16-year-old girl – who were suspects in several robberies and burglaries in the Central and Southern districts. The police reportedly found three guns and items belonging to a robbery victim.
