Thank you, on Snuffy’s behalf

THE EDITOR: I would like to take a moment to recognise the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the staff at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre's School of Veterinary Medicine. The public healthcare system often comes under heavy criticism for its lack of customer service, unbearably long wait times and inadequate equipment. While that is true in many cases, the School of Veterinary Medicine, or the vet school as it is more commonly called is the exception. In February 2024, I noticed my beloved dog Snuffy was lethargic and did not seem his usual boisterous self. I took him to the vet school, and although on that first occasion, we waited for a few hours before a vet could see him, he was immediately given an appointment for the next week for a more in-depth assessment. At that visit, I learnt he had contracted canine transmissible venereal tumour (TVT), a far-too-common sexually transmitted disease that is passed from animal to animal during mating. He would require months of chemotherapy to recover. The emotional toll of hearing this was quite heavy but over the next several months, the dedication, care and consideration shown by Drs Hosein and Thomas made it much easier to bear. He was given regular appointments and some of the best care he has received from a vet and almost every service was free. The exceptions were blood tests and one imaging scan to determine the extent of his tumour. Throughout his treatment, he was seen by both doctors and a specialist. I looked on in awe as my usually aggressive boy would become calm under Dr Hosein's care, even pausing his panting on her request so she could check his heart rate. The relationship between dogs and their humans is special; if you have a four-legged friend, you'll understand. Being able to get them the care they need to live happy, healthy lives is of utmost importance. Their trust that you will make it better can sometimes be heartbreaking. But fortunately for my best boy, that was not the case. I was able to get him the treatment he needed, treatment that was kind, compassionate and caring and, in the last six months, has cost me less than $1,000 at the vet clinic. I tip my hat and my heart to Drs Hosein and Thomas and all the staff at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Other healthcare providers would do well in adapting some (or better yet, all) of your bedside (kennelside?) manner. Thank you, on Snuffy's behalf and every other animal that you have brought comfort and care to.
