TATT: TTT has exclusive Olympics broadcast rights

THE Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) is reminding TV viewers that TTT Ltd is the authorised broadcaster of the 2024 Olympic Games. As TTT, it said, has bought the broadcast rights to show the games in this country. TATT issued a news release on July 31 after subscription-TV customers experienced blackouts on certain channels. It said when trying to view popular sporting events, for example the 2024 Olympic Games and other TV programming, some consumers with subscription TV plans are being greeted by a "blackout" screen. TATT said, "A 'blackout' occurs when the broadcast rights of a particular programme, for example, the Olympic Games, are acquired (often exclusively) by a TV broadcaster." In such a case, it explained, other TV broadcasters cannot legally broadcast the programme, as it would violate the intellectual property rights of the broadcaster who had bought the broadcast rights. This would also breach a broadcaster’s obligations under its concession with TATT, it said. So to comply with the law and their concession obligations, the programme will therefore be blocked by other TV broadcasters which do not have the right to broadcast it.
