Ex-Theatre Asia based in Miaoli City, northern Taiwan, will present its production “Karna” with support from the Ministry of Culture at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav Feb. 11 in New Delhi and Feb. 13 in Jaipur, the ministry said Feb. 10. According to the MOC, the event is a flagship international theatre festival organized by India’s National School of Drama. The invitation marks a significant milestone for Taiwan’s presence in the Asian theatre landscape, enhances cultural ties between the two sides and paves the way for more local art groups to perform on the global stage, it said. Directed by Chongtham Jayanta Meetei, an India-born director who has been living in Taiwan for nearly 20 years, the piece tells the story of Karna, the most intriguing hero in the Indian epic “Mahabharata” who is a mixture of the qualities of heroes from many different traditions. The production features artists from both Taiwan and India, including renowned male traditional Chinese opera singer Chao Hsin, who specializes in playing female characters. The piece combines Taiwan theatrical components, movements and other elements to offer an original work enriched with cross-cultural dialogue and contemporary perspectives, the MOC said, adding that its themes of universal concern such as loyalty and identity resonate across cultures. Founded in 2006 by the Indian director and veteran Hakka theater director and actor Lin Pei-ann, the group is committed to cross-cultural concepts and contemporary Asian aesthetics through an international vision.
