Foreign Minister Lin visits Tuvalu to deepen bilateral ties

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung recently visited Tuvalu as President Lai Ching-te’ special envoy to expand bilateral cooperation in tackling climate change and promoting democratic development.   According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin met with Acting Governor-General Afelee Pita and Prime Minister Feleti Teo to discuss issues of mutual interest. He also attended a state banquet hosted by Teo and witnessed the completion of the Taiwan-Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, which aims to enhance the safety of the island state’s coastal communities.   During his third visit to the Pacific ally, the minister also joined Parliament Speaker Iakoba Italeli at the commencement ceremony for a geological drilling project for the new parliament building, to be designed and constructed by Taiwan’s Overseas Electric and Engineering Co.   Lin donated maintenance costs for Tuvalu’s first undersea cable “Vaka” to ensure communication resilience. Inaugurated in late 2025, this international subsea cable is backed by Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan and the U.S.   Other highlights of Lin’s itinerary included signing a double taxation avoidance agreement with Teo; touring a farm operated by Taiwan’s technical mission; visiting the Princess Margaret Hospital; and joining the Minister for Natural Resources Development Saaga Talu Teafa in inaugurating a smart greenhouse built by Taiwan with financial support from the European Union.
