MOEA outlines policies for 2026

The Ministry of Economic Affairs predicted that Taiwan’s growth rate would exceed 4 percent in 2026, and outlined five policy goals for the year at a press conference Feb. 5 in Taipei City.   The MOEA said it will establish an economic and industrial advisory committee, continue promoting the Five Trusted Industry Sectors initiative, assist traditional, small- and medium-sized enterprises with upgrades and transformation, strengthen the supply resilience of energy and resources, and increase investment and deepen international economic and trade cooperation.   Economic Minister Kung Ming-hsin vowed to strengthen artificial intelligence supply chain resilience and said that the government will focus on silicon photonics technology development in the semiconductor sector and work on the ground equipment and base stations of low-orbit satellites to boost next-generation communications. The minister added that drones will be the key focus in the military sector, and the government will help providers of security and surveillance products meet EU and U.S. procurement legislation requirements to expand their global markets.   Traditional industries need to increase their value and differentiation, Kung said, using the petrochemical industry as an example by sharing that the government will help companies introduce smart and low-carbon technologies to produce key semiconductor components. The authorities will continue bringing AI applications to more sectors and implement revitalization measures for small- and medium-sized enterprises to achieve digital and net-zero transformations while expanding their domestic and global markets, he added.   In addition to continued promotion of the fruitful results of international cooperation, such as the Taiwan-U.S. Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in 2025, the MOEA plans to establish a technological park in Poland and an industrial park in the Philippines, Kung said. The ministry will further host exhibitions in Japan, Poland, the Philippines and the U.S. this year to demonstrate Taiwan’s expertise, he added.   Kung concluded by reasserting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s advanced domestic production exceeds its overseas numbers, and reaffirmed the MOEA’s vision of Taiwan as a thriving economic powerhouse on the global stage.
