A total of 21 Taiwanese films are featuring through Oct. 5 at Filmfest Sundsvall in Sweden, raising the visibility of Taiwan’s cultural content in northern Europe. Sixteen of the films are being shown under the “Spotlight Taiwan” program, organized by the cultural division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. in collaboration with the festival’s organizers. According to the Ministry of Culture, festival founder Andreas Fock expressed hope that the program would allow more Swedish audiences to experience the diversity of Taiwanese cinema. The lineup includes eight feature films, such as the 2024 family drama “Daughter’s Daughter” and horror comedy “Dead Talents Society,” the MOC said. Organizers of the Taipei Film Festival and Taiwan International Documentary Festival also arranged screenings of eight short films, including “Side A: A Summer Day” and “The Fishbowl Girl.” Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning “Life of Pi” was featured in the children’s section, the ministry added. Four Taiwanese films were selected for the competition categories, among them the 2024 feature “Yen and Ai-Lee” and the short “A Brighter Summer Day for the Lady Avengers.” Winners are set to be announced Oct. 3. Founded in 2018, Filmfest Sundsvall has been a member of the nominating committee for Sweden’s leading film honors, the Guldbagge Awards, since 2024, the MOC concluded.
