United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a ‘global SOS’ on climate change and sea level rise on Tuesday while visiting Tonga (Polynesia) for a meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum, where the leaders of a group of 18 countries are meeting, including Australia and New Zealand. Guterres’ trip coincided with a new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), warning that the region faces a “triple whammy” of threats: rising sea levels, ocean warming, and ocean acidification.
