South African-built Volkswagen Polo Cup cars to race in Germany

The Volkswagen Polo Cup has been instrumental in nurturing young South African motor racing talent for decades, and now the series is heading to Germany.A new partnership between Maraco Management and Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa will see the latter supply racing cars to a new German series, which is scheduled to launch in 2026.The Polo GTI racing cars, built at the Volkswagen plant in Kariega, Eastern Cape, are powered by a 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine that produces 220kW.The partnership will also spawn a driver exchange program that will aim to provide young talent with opportunities to grow in the sport.While Volkswagen Motorsport SA will provide the technical support, Maraco Management will offer driver coaching, which includes data analysis and sports mental training.“This partnership marks an important step in strengthening Volkswagen Motorsport’s presence in global motorsport. The Polo Cup Series in 2026 will be a key development for both brands and for the future of motorsport,” said Mike Rowe, head of VW Motorsport SA.He said the partnership would be instrumental in nurturing emerging talent as well as advancing motorsport technology.“We are eager to provide drivers with the tools, training, and support they need to succeed both on the track and in their careers, as we continue to build on Volkswagen’s rich motorsport heritage,” Rowe added.Thorsten Williams of Maraco Management said the initiative will bring together diverse expertise, innovation, and a shared passion for racing."It showcases how working across borders can create powerful synergies and drive progress in the sport, setting the stage for groundbreaking achievements and a truly global impact," Thorsten added.IOL
