BTS Hanbok Designer Kim Ri Eul Passes Away at 32

Kim Ri Eul (birth name Kim Jong Won), the visionary designer behind modern hanboks worn by K-pop idols, has tragically passed away at the age of 32. On February 12, Kim Ri Eul’s family confirmed his passing through a statement to Hankyung.com, saying, “It is true that Kim Ri Eul passed away yesterday.” Reports state that he was found in his apartment in Namwon, and authorities suspect he took his own life. Kim Ri Eul was known for blending tradition with modern aesthetics through his brand Rieul, launched in 2016. He gained widespread recognition when BTS’s Suga, J-Hope, and Jimin wore his hanboks during their performance of IDOL on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His designs were also worn by MONSTA X, CLC, Zico, and many other artists, making him one of the most sought-after hanbok designers in the industry. Beyond K-pop, Kim Ri Eul worked on projects with major brands like McLaren, Samsung Galaxy S21, and the Cultural Heritage Administration. His influence even earned him a spot on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Asia, recognizing his impact on fashion and cultural preservation. Kim Ri Eul’s passing is a heartbreaking loss for both the fashion and entertainment industries. May he rest in peace.
