As attention turns to Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli and his potential return to domestic play, the 36-year-old has reportedly encountered a major hurdle in making such a comeback. According to a report by The Times of India, Kohli has sustained an unlucky neck sprain, which has led him to receive an injection for relief. With the Ranji Trophy set to resume on January 23 and the Champions Trophy just some weeks away, this injury raises concerns about Kohli's availability. "Virat Kohli had a neck sprain and even took an injection for the same," one source from the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) informed the newspaper. Kohli is now expected to join the Delhi squad ahead of their Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra on January 23 and may also train with the team. Anyways, there has been no official update on Kohli's participation in the Ranji Trophy, as stated in the report. "There is a possibility of him (Kohli) skipping the first of the two Ranji Trophy games left and a clear picture could come if the DDCA selectors are given an update," a report suggested, citing a source. Delhi has 2 matches remaining in their Ranji Trophy group stage, facing Saurashtra and Railways (January 30). Both the matches will conclude just before India's ODI series against England begins on February 6, with Kohli anticipated to be part of the squad. The 36-year-old is hoping that the neck sprain does not escalate into a more deep injury that could jeopardize his participation in the Champions Trophy 2025. Meanwhile, fellow Indian star Rishabh Pant has already confirmed his participation for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra. The heightened attention on domestic cricket follows the 1-3 Test series defeat against Australia, which prompted the BCCI to implement a 10-point guideline emphasizing domestic cricket involvement and by imposing restrictions on family presence, among other measures.
