Tsunami Warning Issued After 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has hit the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan on Monday, as reported by The Associated Press, after citing Japan's meteorological agency. The Japan Meteorological Agency has given confirmation that the earthquake occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture at 9:19 pm (local time), registering an intensity of lower 5 on Japan's 0 to 7 scale in the most affected areas. This earthquake's depth was recorded at 37 km, as per the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). On 8th of August in the previous year, 2 strong earthquakes measuring magnitudes 6.9 and 7.1 also hit Japan, affecting the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Although a tsunami warning was issued for several areas, no severe damage or casualties were reported. Previously, on January 1, 2024, a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Suzu, Wajima, and surrounding regions, claiming over 300 lives. Japan's vulnerability to earthquakes is largely due to the country's position at the intersection of several tectonic plates. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the nation experiences frequent seismic activity. Tibet Earthquakes Kill 126 The earthquake in Japan followed a series of 6 tremors, which included a strong 7.1 magnitude quake, which struck Tibet on January 7, killing 126 people and causing extensive damage, including the destruction of many homes. More than 300 people were injured. The seismic activity, centered in Tibet's Tingri County has caused widespread panic as buildings shook throughout the entire region, with tremors felt as far as India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
