Bengaluru used to be India’s most congested city, but in 2024, Kolkata took its place as the country’s most crowded city. The report shows that drivers in Kolkata took about 34 minutes and 33 seconds to travel 10 km last year. Bengaluru was not far behind, with an average time of 34 minutes and 10 seconds for the same distance. In 2024, Kolkata's average speed was 17.4 km/h, while Bengaluru had a slightly faster average speed of 17.6 km/h. Worldwide, Barranquilla in Colombia had the lowest average speed. Drivers there traveled at just 10.3 mph, taking 36 minutes to cover 10 km. In India, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune were among the top five cities in the world with the slowest average speeds. Kolkata ranked second in the world, while Bengaluru and Pune took the third and fourth spots with an average speed of 18 km/h, taking 33 minutes and 22 seconds to cover 10 km in 2024. London, the first European city on the list, ranked fifth. In India, other highly congested cities include Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai, where it takes 32 minutes, 30 minutes, and 29 minutes, respectively, to travel 10 km. Ahmedabad, Ernakulam, and Jaipur were also among the slower cities. Ahmedabad and Ernakulam matched Mumbai with 29 minutes for a 10 km journey, while Jaipur took 28 minutes. Surprisingly, New Delhi had a much lower travel time, averaging just 23 minutes for the same distance. The report found that travel times have increased overall, with 76% of the 500 cities studied showing slower average speeds compared to 2023.
