SC allows states to collect past dues on royalty on minerals from Centre

The Supreme Court dismissed the Centre's plea to apply its July 25 verdict prospectively, confirming states can collect royalties and taxes on mineral-bearing land from April 1, 2005. States can recover outstanding dues over the next 12 years but are prohibited from charging penalties or interest on arrears. This decision has significant financial implications for the Centre.
