The Union Cabinet has officially sanctioned the Chandrayaan-4 mission, marking a significant advancement in India’s space exploration initiatives. Chandrayaan-4 aims to develop and demonstrate essential technologies needed for landing Indian astronauts on the moon and ensuring their safe return to Earth. According to the official announcement, this mission serves as a precursor to India’s goal of landing astronauts on the moon by 2040. “Key technologies, including docking/undocking, lunar landing, safe return, and lunar sample collection and analysis, will be showcased,” the statement noted. The mission is projected to be completed within 36 months of its approval, involving contributions from both industry and academia. ISRO will handle the spacecraft’s development and launch, with all critical technologies being developed domestically. Additionally, the approval for the Chandrayaan-4 mission includes plans for lunar sample collection and analysis, further enhancing India’s scientific knowledge of the moon.
