Kiran Rao's film Laapataa Ladies, which was India's official entry for the Best International Feature category at the 97th Academy Awards, is no longer in the Oscars race. The Hindi film directed by Kiran Rao did not make it to the shortlist of 15 films competing for a spot in the final five at the Oscars, the Academy announced on Wednesday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the shortlists for 10 categories for the 97th Oscars. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and Universal Pictures Wicked have stood out and are now strong contenders for further consideration. British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's film Santosh, featuring Indian actors Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar and representing the UK, has been shortlisted. Other shortlisted films include France's Emilia Pérez, Brazil's I'm Still Here, Canada's Universal Language, the Czech Republic's Waves, Denmark's The Girl with the Needle, and Germany's The Seed of the Sacred Fig. Additionally, the Irish-language film Kneecap has been shortlisted in two Academy Award categories. The final nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced on January 17, 2025, and the ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025. You can watch the awards for free on your local ABC station from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET. If you have cable, ABC will be included in your channels. The event will also stream live on platforms like Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV. Laapataa Ladies, which premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), was released in theaters on March 1 and received great reviews. The film is supported by Rao's Kindling Productions, Aamir Khan Productions, and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios. In September, the Film Federation of India (FFI) selected " Laapataa Ladies " as India’s official entry for the Oscars. It was chosen unanimously from a list of 29 films, which included the Bollywood hit Animal, the Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam, and the Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light.
