Is the Game Over for Rohit Sharma in Tests? Sunil Gavaskar thinks so. While the official statement from the India camp says Rohit "opted to rest" for the India vs Australia 5th Test in Sydney, the term "resting" in Indian cricket often invites various analysis. Rohit’s performance had been underwhelming since he arrived in Australia. In his 5 innings during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, he accumulated only 31 runs. After missing the 1st Test in Perth due to personal reasons, Rohit batted in the middle order for the second and third Tests. He returned to open in the fourth Test but failed to make a proper score. Following Jasprit Bumrah's statement that Rohit has opted to rest for the fifth Test, Gavaskar suggested that this might indicate the end of his Test career. "Melbourne Test would be Rohit Sharma's last, maybe. The selection committee will now be looking at somebody who can lead till the 2025-2027 World Test Championship final. I mean, India may not qualify but the thinking process will be like that from the selection committee. So, maybe, we have probably seen Rohit Sharma for the last time in Tests," Sunil Gavaskar elaborated on Star Sports. India’s practice session on the eve of the match indicated that Rohit would undoubtedly sit out. The speculation about his future in Tests gained further traction after India’s loss in the 4th Test in Melbourne, leaving them in 1-2 in the five-match series. The previous year has been Rohit’s least productive year in Test cricket, scoring only 619 runs from 26 innings in 14 matches, with the average of 24.76. After playing his 67th Test in Melbourne, Rohit is now expected to very soon bring an end to his tumultuous Test career. While he enjoyed immense success in white-ball cricket, Rohit’s 11-year Test journey has not mirrored those wins. After a slow start in the middle-order following his debut in 2013, Rohit's red-ball career found a new route in 2019 when he began opening. Even after leading India to a long-awaited T20 World Cup title last year, his form in Tests has sharply declined. READ MORE - Why Cardigans Are Women's Timeless Favorite style for Comfort & Style
