Wan-Bissaka accepts first DR Congo call-up after England snub

Former England youth international Aaron Wan-Bissaka has finally committed his international future to the Democratic Republic of Congo, earning his maiden call-up for the Leopards. The 27-year-old defender, who now plays for West Ham United after leaving Manchester United, had long been at the centre of a tug-of-war between England and DR Congo.Having represented England at U20 and U21 level and even receiving a senior call-up in 2019, Wan-Bissaka never made a competitive appearance for the Three Lions. That left the door open for him to pledge allegiance to his parents’ homeland.Head coach Sébastien Desabre confirmed the inclusion of Wan-Bissaka in his squad for upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Sudan and Senegal in September. The move strengthens DR Congo’s defensive setup, which already features Chancel Mbemba, Arthur Masuaku, and Axel Tuanzebe.Wan-Bissaka’s decision comes at a crucial time for the Leopards, who are pushing for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. For Wan-Bissaka, the call-up represents not just a fresh start but also a chance to finally showcase his talents on the international stage after years of waiting in the shadows...
