Malian Eric Chelle appointed as new head coach of Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, tasking him with guiding the team toward qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Chelle replaces Finidi George, who resigned following a disappointing start to the World Cup qualifiers, including a draw with South Africa and a loss to Benin.Chelle, 47, takes over with immediate effect after receiving the approval of the NFF Executive Committee on January 7. His primary responsibility will be to lead the Super Eagles through the crucial final two qualifiers in March.Chelle is no stranger to African football, having led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly losing to host nation Ivory Coast in extra time.With a managerial record of 14 wins, five draws, and three losses, Chelle has demonstrated his ability at the continental level.He previously played for French clubs such as Lens, Valenciennes, and Chamois Niortais before transitioning into coaching, and managing several French lower-division clubs.Chelle’s appointment brings renewed hope for the Super Eagles, who are looking to bounce back from recent setbacks and aim for a strong World Cup qualification campaign.
