Ghana spent $15m on athlete meals during 2023 African Games, says MP

Kobena Woyome, Ranking Member on the Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee of Parliament, has revealed that Ghana spent an astonishing $15 million on food for athletes during the 2023 African Games.This amount, as detailed in a document submitted to the parliamentary committee, was reportedly spent over just 18 days.In a conversation with Joy Sports, Woyome highlighted that the committee has called for more information on this expenditure and is planning to launch an investigation."You are spending $245 million, and out of that, we got to know that a whopping amount of $15 million was used to feed athletes for 18 days," Woyome stated.The committee is keen on confirming the number of athletes who took part in the games, along with other related details.This revelation from Woyome comes amidst the ongoing controversy over the broadcasting rights for the African Games.The Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif previously claimed that $3 million was paid to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for coverage of the 13th African Games.However, GBC's Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, has disputed this claim, clarifying that the state broadcaster received only $105,000.
