Ex-Sports Minister blames black stars players for 2014 World Cup scandal

Former Minister of Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has blamed the 2014 World Cup scandal squarely on the Black Stars players.The country was subjected to international ridicule as players threatened a boycott over unpaid bonuses, prompting the government to fly $3 million in a chartered flight to play each player $100,000.In an interview with ChannelOne TV, Afriyie Ankrah expressed frustration over being unfairly targeted, stating that the focus should have been on addressing the core issues rather than solely on him.He said, "The biggest tragedy that happened to us was the way we handled the aftermath of the 2014 World Cup. After that World Cup, instead of the country focusing on the root causes of the issues, the focus was on me so it was all about me, me, me."He explained, "The root cause of the problem was that players insisted on $100,000 appearance fees; the government said we could only give $82,500. The players threatened to boycott training if they didn’t receive the full amount, so the government had to concede.
