Presidential hopeful calls for higher betting taxes in Ghana

Ghanaian Presidential hopeful Kofi Akpaloo is calling for a tax increase on sports betting rather than a removal of the tax.He argues that boosting taxes on gambling can help deter the youth from engaging in what he describes as “evil.”Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPG), criticised both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their promises to abolish the existing 10% withholding tax on sports betting winnings.NDC candidate John Mahama and NPP’s Dr Mahamudu Bawumia have both pledged to eliminate this tax if elected. Akpaloo, however, believes these promises are deceptive and suggest a lack of competence in creating real job opportunities."It’s a big lie to say you’ll create jobs while encouraging more betting. We need leaders who address these issues effectively, not just make empty promises," he said on Starr FM.Ghana will head to the polls to elect a new leader on December 7, 2024.
