Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has questioned the NDC’s campaign promise to introduce a 24-hour economy, arguing that such a system already exists.Gyan expressed his views during an Instagram Live session, emphasizing that police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate round the clock.“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis. So, if the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should say that they will improve it. It’s not a new policy,” Gyan stated.His comments come amid debates surrounding the 24-hour economy initiative, which was a central campaign promise of former President John Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general elections.The policy aimed to promote economic activity around the clock by supporting businesses and creating jobs, especially in the informal sector.Critics, including Gyan, argue that aspects of the policy are already functional in essential services.Supporters, however, contend that the plan goes beyond existing structures, seeking to integrate broader sectors like retail, transportation, and entertainment into a fully operational 24-hour system.John Mahama won the elections and has committed to introducing the policy when sworn into office on January 7, 2025.
