Brussels mulls adding emissions fees to extra-EU departures

The European Commission is considering extending the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) to cover flights departing from the EU to other regions of the world. The initiative, which has not been formally tabled yet, forms part of a broader review of the ETS system. Currently, the scheme requires airlines to acquire permits covering all of their emissions from intra-EU flights. The permits are traded on the market and currently priced at around EUR75 euros (USD88) per tonne of carbon dioxide.
