FIRES – Campfires banned in Kamloops Fire Centre starting Thursday

Campfires will be banned in the Kamloops Fire Centre as of Thursday at noon. The B.C. Wildfire Service announced today (Aug. 26, 2025) that category 1 campfires will be prohibited until Oct. 17. A campfire is defined as any fire no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide used by any person for recreational purposes or by a First Nation for a ceremonial purpose. Fires larger than that are considered a category 2 open fire, which is also banned along with category 3. Anyone ignoring the ban may be issued a $1,150 ticket, required to pay an administrative fee of $10,000 and, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and jailed for up to year. In addition to the ban, the following activities and equipment are prohibited: Air curtain burners Carbonizers Binary exploding targets Fireworks, as defined in the Fireworks Act of BC Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description Controlled air incinerators Sky lanterns Wood fired hot tubs, wood fired pizza ovens and other wood fired devices unless vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building
