CVRD wraps up years long project to remove invasive plants from Memory Island

The CVRD is celebrating the culmination of a three-year volunteer project to remove Scotch Broom from an island in Shawnigan Lake.  BC Parks and the CVRD Parks and Trails Volunteer program worked throughout June to remove the overpopulation of blooming Scotch Broom on Memory Island which is a small provincial park managed by the CVRD.  “It is rare in the world of invasive species removal to have a clear win like this one, so this project feels like a real success,” said CVRD Parks Volunteer Coordinator, Elizabeth Aitken.  The team hauled out just over 12-hundred kilograms of blooming Scotch Broom out of the park on June 25 and 26.  Cowichan Area Supervisor with BC Parks Katy Fulton says the collaborative effort should be celebrated and thanked the team for coming out.  The CVRD says that they will continue to monitor Scotch Broom levels on Memory Island into the future.  The post CVRD wraps up years long project to remove invasive plants from Memory Island appeared first on My Cowichan Valley Now.
