Campbell River resident named Freeman of the City for community work

During the Canada Day ceremony, one Campbell River resident has been named Freeman of the City for her work in the community. Carol Chapman got the title for organizing Canada Day events for the last 30 years, which all started after hearing that budget constraints would impact the celebrations. As a response, she managed to raise $24,000 with 24 businesses for the event. According to the City, the title of Freeman is meant to recognize those who have created either pride, given exemplary service, or made a big contribution to the city. Mayor Kermit Dahl says Chapman’s name was brought forward by Freemen Mary Ashley and Bill Matthews. “Council and I agreed wholeheartedly that Carol was a deserving recipient,” said Dahl. “Carol’s work organizing Canada Day events for the past thirty years and long history of community service is an inspiration for members of the community.” They say before this title, Chapman won the community builder award for her work in 2008. Chapman is now one of only 10 people to have received this title in history and is also the first one since Bill Matthews was honoured in 2006.
