Aquicon Construction has started work on tearing down the Bracebridge Memorial Arena. The area, which was built in 1949, is being decommissioned as part of the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre (MLCC) project. The Brampton, Ont.-based contractor was handed the contract to demolish the 75-year-old building along with being tasked with building the MLCC. It hasn't been determined yet what will be done with the soon-to-be-vacant property. Officials with the Town of Bracebridge outline how fencing will be installed around the perimeter of the property Monday morning with demolition work continuing into October. They add the project will only take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Between Aug. 19 and Oct. 31, officials say Chub Downey Lane from James St. to Hiram St. will be closed. Also, the sidewalk on the east side of James St. from Ann St. to Chub Downey Lane and the Hiram St. sidewalk from Ann St. to Chub Downey Lane may be closed temporarily. Officials add the skateboard park near the Memorial Arena will stay open, but a portion of the gravel parking lot will be closed. "The contractor will attempt to minimize any inconvenience and will oversee the maintenance and security of the site during the project," they continue. The Memorial Arena is being replaced by the Muskoka Lumber Arena at the MLCC. The facility was opened for those with existing rentals at the Memorial Arena and for sponsor-only tours at the start of the month, ahead of its public opening on Aug. 23.
