‘It’s up to us’: North Cowichan Council looks to advocate for lake health in the valley

North Cowichan Council is looking to learn more about what it can do to prevent fish kills in Somenos and Quamichan Lakes.  This comes after a massive fish kill event that saw thousands of dead Pumpkinseed fish and a few hundred coho salmon lining the shores of Somenos Lake.  Now, Councilor Christopher Justice wants municipal staff to prepare a report to see how the council can better advocate for the watershed.  “The Fish kill really shows how serious the lake’s problems are and the inadequacy of the solutions that are being done for it,” said Justice at the September 4th regular meeting.  He adds that the recent fish kill has caught the public’s attention which could be used to get more support from the provincial government.  “It’s up to us to make sure the province is doing what it ought to be doing”  Justice pointed to similar efforts by the Capital Regional District to advocate for lake health in its region.  The report will look at what steps are being taken to improve water quality in Somenos Lake and include suggestions for how the municipality can help the watershed.  The post ‘It’s up to us’: North Cowichan Council looks to advocate for lake health in the valley appeared first on My Cowichan Valley Now.
