Port-a-potties to be replaced by flushable toilets on most B.C. construction sites

A long-standing issue at construction sites in B.C. is soon to be resolved.  Occupational Health and Safety Regulation changes will make it mandatory for construction sites with 25 or more workers to provide flush toilets, hand-washing facilities and clean washrooms.  Minister of Labour Harry Bains said everyone knows how unpleasant port-a-potties can be, creating a health and safety issue for construction workers.  “We have heard clearly from the building sector that it is an important issue for workers, and it contributes to the sector’s ability to attract and retain workers, including women.”  The new requirement makes toilets needed to be connected to a sewer system or holding tank and use a clean flow of water or a mixture of water and chemicals to flush the bowl.  Hand-washing facilities will require soap and water or other methods of hand-cleaning, while the washroom as a whole must have employers maintain and clean them with ventilation.   Workers have long raised concerns about the need for improved facilities on sites, with Premier David Eby committing to making changes in October 2023.  WorkSafeBC will allow for flexibility if flush toilets cannot be provided but employers must provide evidence for being unable to provide the proper facilities.  The changes to the regulation come into effect on October 1.  The post Port-a-potties to be replaced by flushable toilets on most B.C. construction sites appeared first on My Campbell River Now.
