City of Campbell River gets funding boost for youth crime and gang prevention

The City of Campbell River is using some funds from the provincial government to help keep children and youth away from gangs and organized crime.  “Supporting our youth and keeping them safe from gang violence and organized crime is a priority for our community,” said Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island.  The $89,650 in funding comes from the Guns Gangs and Violence Action Fund and will be used to support an existing local program in Campbell River.  Mayor of Campbell River Kermit Dahl says that the program connects with youth and encourages early intervention for at risk individuals.  The city says the Crime Prevention Youth Engagement Program helps kids stay away from gangs and organized crime.  According to the Province they have received $10.9 million from Public Safety Canada to fund similar programs in BC.  “I am very pleased that we are supporting the excellent work of Campbell River, and I look forward to working with the city on important initiatives that enhance our response to gang conflict in our province,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
