Local Humane Society seeking municipal assistance to cover deficit

An annual deficit of more than $304,000 is causing some barriers for the Humane Society Hastings-Prince Edward in completing its animal care work. Belleville Council received a letter from Humane Society executive director Kareen McKinnon at its meeting on Monday asking for municipal support in funding Shelter and Spay/Neuter Services for animals brought to its shelter. The letter noted that current municipal funding is just under $51,000 but the total annual pound contract fees for services such as shelter, spay/neuter, and vaccinations for the animals they house is over $355,000.
